The owner of LJ’s Pizza will host a farewell for his restaurant this Saturday, reversing initial plans to close the Mesa business without announcing a final day.

Clay Moser told the Tribune in April he would shutter the 38-year-old pizzeria without fanfare, but the response from customers triggered a change in heart. He now plans to serve 500 slices of cake and cut $5 off the normal $10.50 price for his pizza buffet after 4:30 p.m. Saturday. LJ’s normally closes at 8:30 p.m. but Moser will stay open until customers stop coming in or until he runs out of food.

LJ’s peaked in the 1990s, serving 69,000 pizzas a year just at the buffet. That dropped to 18,000 pizzas last year. Moser will continue LJ’s catering after he closes the restaurant at 1038 E. Main St. News of the closing drummed up interest in the pizzeria, Moser said.

“Actually, we’ve been real busy,” he said. “If we’d been like this all summer, I’d stay open.”

[sad] Clay, I can't believe you are closing. That was my first job when I moved to Mesa in 1978. I will have to come in one last time. You guys have the best pizza in the valley.
