The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has been named the 2012 airport of the year by the Arizona Department of Transportation. ADOT recognized the airport for accomplishments that include Allegiant airlines adding five new nonstop destinations, the addition of Spirit Airlines, breaking ground on a two-gate expansion and organizing an aviation event that drew more than 10,000 people to the airport.

The airport has more than 171,000 takeoffs and landings a year, and is the 65th busiest airport in the U.S., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Gateway is one of 85 Arizona airports in ADOT’s system of airports.
