The Red Mountain Freeway stretch of Loop 202 eastbound at Mesa Drive has reopened after a deadly two-vehicle crash involving a wrong-way driver overnight.
Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Ed Wessing tells The Associated Press a male driver behind the wheel of a Jeep Grand Cherokee struck a car driven by 36-year-old Michelle Pagano of Mesa. She died at the scene.
Wessing says the wrong-way driver at times was going over 100 mph. Police used a helicopter to follow the erratic driver from U.S. 60 to surface streets in east Mesa. The driver eventually entered the Loop 202 at Gilbert Road traveling in the wrong direction.
Wessing says the 25-year-old driver, identified as Anthony Dose, is hospitalized with numerous fractures but is stable and expected to survive. He’s also facing several felony charges.
No officers were injured. The incident forced the closure of the freeway at Mesa Drive from about 2:30-5:45 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
