A 41-year-old Mesa woman who suffered second-degree burns to her face and chest after another woman threw acid on her Thursday remains hospitalized in the burn unit of Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, according to hospital records.
Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying or locating the woman who police say attacked Derri Velarde in the parking lot of Vista Grove Apartments, 1320 S. Val Vista Drive, about 1 p.m.
The attacker was described as a 30- to 40-year-old Hispanic woman with black shoulder-length hair, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 140 pounds and wearing a black tank top and black sweat pants with a white stripe.
Police also are following up on leads as they believe the attack was not random. Although Velarde says she did not recognize her attacker, authorities believe it is someone who knows her. No motive is known at this time, police said.
Meanwhile, police Tuesday released a composite sketch of the attacker. Anyone with information about the incident can call Mesa police (480) 644-2211.
