A child has died after she was struck by a vehicle in Mesa Saturday night.

Mesa police spokesman Steven Berry said that around 8 p.m. the child was with her parents who were walking along a canal bank near Main Street and Gilbert Road.

The family was at a canal crossing with a light-activated crosswalk and they had the green light, according to Berry.

Berry said the child, 5-year-old Marlene Mendoza, went out into the roadway on her tricycle ahead of her parents and was struck by a pickup truck.

The driver, a 43-year-old woman, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Police do not believe the driver was impaired at the time of the incident.

It appears that the driver did not see the crosswalk light and then hit the girl because she didn't know she was there.

An update from Mesa Police says the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Main Street is closed in both directions for the investigation.
