A 15-year-old girl died late Friday night in a Mesa rollover involving a vehicle she was driving illegally, an incident report states.
Shelby Duran of Mesa was ejected about 10:10 p.m. from a Mitsubishi Montero sport utility vehicle and suffered serious head injuries.
She was flown to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital and died soon after arrival, Mesa police Sgt. Chuck Trapani said.
The four other passengers in the vehicle escaped serious injury. Trapani said there were adult passengers but did not release their names or relationships to Duran.
The vehicle was heading west around a construction area on a rerouted portion of University Drive at a high rate of speed, when it failed to negotiate a curve just west of Ellsworth Road, the report states.
Trapani said Duran was not wearing a seat belt.
“I don’t think impairment was a factor,” Trapani said. “Just speed and her inexperience as a driver.”
Duran did not have a driver’s license or learner’s permit. She turned 15 this month and was ineligible to receive a permit for another seven months.
