In the past two weeks, the Mesa United Way pledge campaign for 2011-2012 has brought in another $170,000. As of Tuesday, $600,000 had been raised toward the $2,825,000 campaign goal. The campaign, which started July 1, ends June 30, 2012.
Donations have been slow as folks who gave to the campaign in the past cannot afford it now or are in need of help themselves due to the struggling economy.
But some workplaces are continuing to give - and setting records. Last year, Mesa's Alliant Techsystems donated $5,714. This year, in addition to payroll deductions, the company held an auction and bake sale to bring their contribution to $23,230.
The Mesa United Way funds agencies and programs that provide a range of services to homeless families, homebound elderly, victims of domestic violence, people with disabilities, and youth in the community.
Donations to the pledge campaign go to 27 agencies throughout the East Valley that must meet rigorous conditions and oversight. Donations to this campaign do not go toward the Mesa United Way's operating costs; those expenses are covered by corporate sponsors and grants.
