Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 21-year-old man after his 19-year-old girlfriend was found shot to death in the desert northeast of Mesa Thursday morning.

Sheriff's spokesman Chris Hegstrom says officers responded to a 911 call just before 6:30 a.m. about a shooting near Power and McDowell roads, south of the Salt River.

Hegstrom said the boyfriend was allegedly confronting his girlfriend about an affiliation but wasn't satisfied with her answer so he fired several shots at her.

Deputies said the man was booked into the 4th Ave jail on one count of 1st degree premeditated murder, one count of aggravated assault and one count of unlawful imprisonment.

Hegstrom said the victim is not being identified at this time pending notification of next of kin.
