Benedictine University has invited Mesa Mayor Scott Smith to address the university’s 120th commencement May 11 on the school’s main campus in Illinois.
Benedictine University is one of five liberal arts colleges in the last few years to open campuses in Mesa. It is the first Catholic university in Arizona.
Smith, an accountant and an attorney, helped lead Mesa’s initiative to bring more education opportunities to the city.
“Mesa is excited to have Benedictine University as part of our community,” Smith said in a release. “I am honored for the opportunity to visit the main campus and speak to graduates at commencement this spring. I enjoy speaking to college students, especially on graduation day. They will certainly face daunting challenges as they begin the next chapter of their lives, but I am confident that this generation will lead us into better times.”
