East Mesa resident Gail Brown, a nurse at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Phoenix, has been named the recipient of the University of Phoenix’s Spirit of Education Award for 2009.
Brown, a graduate of the University of Phoenix, works in the obstetrics and gynecology department and cancer center at St. Joseph’s, where she delivers care and oversees women’s wellness.
She also donates her nursing skills to St. Joseph’s Foundation’s charitable clinics that serve uninsured women. These clinics provide no-cost cancer screenings and prenatal care for pregnant women.
Brown also volunteers for the Phoenix chapter of The Flying Samaritans, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care to rural areas in Mexico.
