What does good dental hygiene look like for children?

It looks the same as it does for any other person. Children need to brush their teeth twice a day, floss, eat fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water.

What if your child is younger and won’t brush his/her teeth?

You as a parent need to brush it for them. It is critical that a child’s teeth are being taken care of. If they don’t brush twice a day than at least make sure it’s once a day. Be enthusiastic about brushing their teeth. The way you approach it makes a huge difference to your child. What may also help is having a sticker chart that rewards them if they brush or giving your child flavored toothpaste. Parents need to remember though that having their children come in for regular check-ups, every six, months is important.

How early should my child start brushing and flossing?

When that first tooth pops up is when you should start brushing. When you have teeth starting to touch, that’s when food will start getting stuck and when flossing should be regularly done. Children are just as susceptible to cavities as adults are so it’s important that they floss and brush regularly.

My child drinks a lot of juice. Is that okay?

We always encourage water over juice. Some juice is okay but having it a lot or if your child has it before bed is not good. Juice is filled with sugar that if it sits in your child’s mouth will create a breeding ground for bacteria, which will start the decaying process.

What do I do if my child’s tooth starts to hurt?

Come on in. That is what we are here for. Dr. Kalika is gentle with each of his patients and understands the fear that parents and even children can have coming in.
