I am always on the lookout for that little, undiscovered gem of a restaurant. You know the kind: family owned, comfortable, great food and NOT crowded! I am happy to report my finding. Cafe Roma is just the place.
I hesitate to even tell you about it for fear that every Tribune reader will now flock there, and I’ll have to call ahead to secure my favorite table. But this place is worth reporting.
Cafe Roma is on the northeast corner of McKellips and Recker roads in Mesa. The menu offers every Sicilian’s dream item. The entire left side of the menu boasts their many pasta dishes, while the right side offers chicken, fresh seafood, steak and to-die-for Italian sausage. A basket of fresh, warm Italian bread and butter is placed on the table when you arrive, and if you’re not careful, you can fill up on it before your entree comes.
Cafe Roma is family owned and operated. Mom seats you, brother and sister take your order, and dad is the head chef who will pass through the dining area occasionally to be sure you are happy with your selection.
And if you aren’t stuffed by the time you finish your wine and pasta, be sure to have dessert and coffee. The tiramisu and cheesecake are among my favorites.
