A motorcycle rider died after colliding with a minivan near the intersection of Country Club Drive and McLellan Road in Mesa Wednesday night, Mesa police said.

The motorcyclist was heading north on Country Club Drive and passed through the intersection, however he then collided with a Chevy minivan, which was also traveling north, said Det. Steve Berry, Mesa spokesman.

The collision was witnessed by a Mesa police officer while she was watching traffic at the northwest corner of the intersection, Berry said. The officer quickly crossed the street and began chest compressions on the motorcyclist who had sustained severe head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Mesa Fire Department responded to the scene and continued life-saving procedures, but the man was declared dead at the scene, Berry said.

The driver of the minivan was not impaired at the time of the accident and it is undetermined if the motorcyclist was impaired at this time, Berry said.

The man will not be identified until next of kin have been notified.
