Two people were able to escape a fire at their east Mesa home on Monday morning after an off-duty police officer alerted them to the blaze.

The fire, which broke out at 1 a.m. in the 600 block of South Portland on Monday, was noticed by an off-duty police officer who saw flames and smoke coming from the roof of the residence, according to Mesa police.

Fire crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to other nearby residences.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but police say it does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
