A City of Mesa streets department worker talks with the homeowners who made it out safely along the 600 block of South Portland where a fire broke out early Monday morning, March 26, 2012 in Mesa. Mesa Police Officer Duce was off-duty after completing his patrol shift noticing flames coming from a residence in the area as he traveled along Greenfield Road. Officer Duce reported the fire to Dispatch. With heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the structure, Officer Duce alerted the two occupants of the residence to the fire who were safely evacuated. Mesa Fire responded and was able to contain the fire from spreading to surrounding residences. The cause of the fire is still unknown and does not appear to be suspicious. [Tim Hacker/ Tribune]
