The 3.1-mile light-rail extension through downtown Mesa has cleared a hurdle in its development. The Federal Transit Administration approved Metro’s request to begin the next step of the project, which allows design and engineering work to start. The work will take about two years and construction will begin shortly after that.
The line is set to open in 2016, extending it from its current end-point at Sycamore to just east of Mesa Drive.
The project will cost about $200 million, paid for by a mix of federal and local funds.

At the same $80 million per mile construction cost as the 20-mile corridor construction cost between Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa?
East Valley Tribune keeps on saying that the capital cost ($194 million or $200 million) to pay for the 3.1 mile extension to extend the light-rail line down Main Street to Mesa Drive through the heart of downtown Mesa will come from Proposition 400 and federal transit dollars or a federal grant.

2016? I'll be retired by then. By the time it extends to Power Road, I'll be deceased.

Truth: I agree with you. Now, I have to wonder why they did not install a monorail or subway system instead or even a combination thereof? Light rail creates big traffic issues.
