A Mesa dentist hopes to add some serious fun to Halloween.

Just don’t take the whole idea too seriously, he warns.

With a $50 donation to Sharing Down Syndrome, Dr. Shayne Guffey, owner of Mountain View Family Dentistry, will create a custom set of fangs to help “toothless vampires.”

“We were honestly looking for something fun to do. Everybody goes to work everyday and does the same thing. We brainstormed and thought this would be fun to do,” he said.

The “Fangs for Friends” fundraiser will benefit Sharing Down Syndrome, an organization that provides information and resources to parents of children.

Each year, the nonprofit group also tries to put on a holiday party for families who share a connection with Down syndrome. But Guffey learned that last year the party was cancelled due to lack of funds. That’s one reason the dental staff chose it as the beneficiary for the fundraiser.

Fang making started in September. It starts with just a few minutes in the dental chair while a dental impression is made. Then the would-be “vampires” are given the option of choosing “vicious” looking fangs or something subtle.

“We customize it for the patient,” he said.

The idea has also been a hit with fans of the “Twilight” books and films, Guffey said.

“I tell patients, ‘I’m sure you know somebody who is excited about the Twilight movies.’ And they look at me and say, ‘That would be me,’” Guffey said. “I’m not into the movies myself, but it seems everybody I know is excited about this last one.

Fans can get their fangs made until Nov. 16, the day the final movie installment – the second part of “Breaking Dawn” — is released in theaters.

“We’ve done several sets. Some of our own patient, lots of our friends,” Guffey said. “The entire staff has done it. We’re having a ball with this. Hopefully nobody is taking it too seriously, but every vampire needs a dentist.”
