Before you know it, Mesa’s many citrus trees will be bursting with fruit ripe for picking – and for tempting those destructive rodents known as roof rats. You can help keep the rats away from yards and homes by volunteering to collect citrus for donation to local food banks.

The City of Mesa’s Neighborhood Outreach Office will conduct volunteer-driven Citrus Collections Events from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, Feb. 9 and 23, and March 9 and 23. The volunteers will gather at Mountain View Park, 845 N. Lindsay Road. They will assist with set-up and tear-down, greet residents, help remove citrus from vehicles, direct traffic, assist with sorting and tossing old citrus, and deliver door-to-door flyers regarding the “Pick Your Citrus Day” event, according to the ad on volunteermatch.org.

For more information or to volunteer, call Michelle Alvis at (480) 644-3705 or visit http://www.mesaaz.gov/Volunteer/.
