A woman has accused her boyfriend of choking her, threatening to cut out her eyes with scissors and holding her against her will in their Mesa home for seven hours over the weekend.
Raymond Duke, 41, was arrested Sunday after police received a call from a Mesa hospital where the woman was being treated for redness on her neck and given stitches for abrasions to the side of her body that she suffered when breaking a bedroom window and escaping, Mesa police detective Jerry Gissel said.
Gissel did not release the name of the victim.
The woman had knocked on the door of a neighboring family’s home, the Gouveias, but the woman was gone when they answered, said Sarabeth Gouveia, 26, who lives there with her parents.
“We heard pounding on the door and . . . the doorbell was ringing really fast, so we knew somebody needed help but we didn’t see anyone,” she said.
The Gouveias called police about 6:30 a.m., but officers didn’t see any suspicious activity in the area around the couple’s home in the 1700 block of South Linda, Gissel said.
Gissel said the woman later told police that she went to her father’s house nearby and he took her to the hospital.
The hospital notified police of the incident a little after 7 a.m., and police arrested Duke at his home, police said.
Gouveia said she had called police again after finding blood on her door and a blood trail that led across her walkway and yard.
The woman alleges that Duke attacked her Saturday night and held her inside the house for seven hours.
She told police he began choking her, claimed he would “cut her eyes out with scissors,” threw butane on her and threatened to set her on fire, Gissel said.
Gissel said police were still investigating the case late Sunday.
The couple, who have been together 2 1 /2 years, had a prior domestic violence call about six months ago, Gissel said.
Police said in that incident, the woman told them Duke had held a gun to her head.
Duke has been booked on suspicion of unlawful imprisonment and aggravated assault stemming from domestic violence.
