A group of Mesa police officers and their police dogs will pay tribute to fallen K-9 officer Leon at the intermission of the Phoenix Coyotes game Thursday.

The game begins at 7 p.m. at Jobing.com Arena, 9400 Maryland Ave., in Glendale.

Leon, a dog who was handled by Sgt. Don Rudd, died in the line of duty March 20. The Belgian Malinois is the first Mesa K-9 to die while serving, according to police.

During the second intermission, Rudd and fellow officers will recognize the K-9 unit’s commitment to serving the community.
