A New Leaf is moving forward with the La Mesita Project, an affordable, supportive housing initiative in Mesa that will include 80 mixed-use apartments and 16 emergency homeless shelter units with onsite services, community space and light-rail transportation adjacent to the property.
With the help from a low-income housing tax credit award from the Arizona Department of Housing and additional support by local cities and communities, the aging La Mesita Family Homeless Shelter will be transformed in several phases through two re-development plans.

Oh, oh Folks.....here we go again....lol.
Watch all the....N.I.M.B.Y.'s (Not In My Back Yard) on the Mesa City Council go...NUTS.
They didn't go for the senior citizen "Geezer-ville" proposal even after the builder moved it off of the Main Street site to a block south (where the Yuppies, College Kids and Upscale Loft Dwellers won't see them) and now here comes a Metro-Rail Car load of the so-called "Down and Out-ers".
Newly coiffed, buffed and well-groomed Vice-Mayor (our own "Prince of Wales" = waiting, waiting, waiting) Somers will be slouching in his chair, tapping his fingers when this proposal is brought forward.
I can hear Mayor Scott Smith now........"What the Councilman ....'meant" to say"
"What the Councilwomen ....'meant'....to say".
"What the City Manager....'meant'....to say"
"What the City Building Manager ....'meant"....to say"
As he "clarifies" (to his way of thinking anyway) what everybody is talking about.
Should be some "fun times" at the OK Corral.....ooops....I meant the...Mesa City Council Meetings..........once again. Well at least it gives them something to consider besides ........THROWING MORE MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AT THE ..FIESTA MALL..........."MONEY PIT".......[wink]

Leon,
"Upscale Loft Dwellers"?
I didn't realize we had "Upscale Lofts" in downtown.
At least, "south of Main" is closer to the food stamps. [beam]

leon: You bet your tush not in my backyard. Why would anyone want a low income housing project near their home? Every low income project in the US has lowered the value of the surrounding homes. If I invest 250K or more into a home, do you think I want it to be worth 150K because of my "neighbors"? Let me give you a recent example. I live in an affluent small suburb of Cincinnati and there is one just like ours a few miles away. A number of years ago the city asked both communities to accept section 8 housing. They did, we didn't. Fast forward about 5 years. Their average home value across the entire city is anywhere from 10% to 20% less than comparable houses in my city. They have twice the number of people underwater than we do and three times the "walk-a-ways". Care to guess why?

Well, if construction goes through with this project don't foget to add a police substation to the property.
