With little more than two months to go in the 2011-12 pledge campaign, the Mesa United Way is offering potential donors an additional incentive for helping their neighbors in need: the chance to win a Disneyland vacation.

“We’re coming down to the wire with our 2011-12 pledge campaign and we still have to raise $590,000 to meet our goal of $2,825,000,” Linda Haskell, resource development director, said in a news release. “The needs are still great in our community, so it’s imperative that we meet our goal.”

To help out, GetAwayToday.com has donated a Disneyland vacation package to Mesa United Way. In the Happiest Sweepstakes on Earth, Arizona adults can enter to win the vacation, which includes a two-night hotel stay and two adult one-day Park Hopper passes to Disneyland and California Adventure.

“You don’t have to make a donation to enter the sweepstakes, but of course we hope even those on a tight budget will give a few dollars,” said Haskell. “Just a 10-dollar donation can provide 50 meals for the hungry. When you consider that one of every four children in Arizona will go to bed hungry tonight, every dollar counts.”

Mesa United Way’s 26 partner agencies provided services for 30,858 people last fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011, Haskell said. Those services included more than 4.6 million meals served to people in need, including the homebound elderly.

Donations to Mesa United Way’s Community Chest go entirely to its partner agencies because overhead expenses are paid by grants and a group of corporate sponsors.

This year’s campaign has been slow because of lingering effects of the recession. Many past donors who lost jobs, income or homes when the economy tanked are now in need of assistance themselves.
