Last Friday, Ed Barrett and his wife, Marilyn, visited the Mesa Fire Department to say "thank you" to first responders and hospital staff who saved Ed's life last month.
On March 18, Ed Barrett suffered a heart attack. When rescue crews arrived at the scene, they used the "cardiac alert" program developed by Banner Heart Hospital in conjunction with Banner Baywood Medical Center. Crews notified Banner Baywood's emergency department and Banner Heart's cardiac team to prepare for rapid treatment.
Medical caregivers also lowered Barrett's body temperature using ice packs in a method called "therapeutic hypothermia," which helps preserve neurological functions.
