Take a dip in Mesa’s newest community pool Friday morning, and learn more about drowning prevention at the same time.

Mesa will host a community event 8 a.m. to noon Friday, July 27 at Skyline Aquatic Center, 845 S. Crismon Road, to mark August’s recognition as Drowning Impact Awareness Month. Vice Mayor Scott Somers and the Mesa Fire and Medical Department will be onhand during the event, as will a number of vendors.

Arizona is ranked second in the country in childhood drownings. Mesa safety officials have been called to 16 incidents since January, according to the Mesa Fire Department.

The free event includes swimming, a community pancake breakfast (until 10 a.m.), water safety classes for caregivers, demonstrations by synchronized swim teams and water polo teams, group swimming lessons and CPR classes throughout the morning.
