Mesa has settled a pay dispute involving about two dozen SWAT officers who claimed they were owed $3,000 apiece in back pay.

The pay dispute arose in November when an attorney representing the Mesa Police Association filed a notice of claim against the city. The claim is a precursor to a lawsuit but was resolved before heading to court.

The MPA threatened to sue the city if 25 SWAT officers were not compensated for hours they racked up while on standby between January and December 2009.

MPA officials say the claim sparked negotiations that resulted in the agreement for back pay and the city has issued the checks.
