Freedom Writer Tony Becerra recently spoke with students at Mesa’s Academy With Community Partners. Becerra shared his experience being a member of the "Freedom Writers," a group of Long Beach High School freshmen in the 1990s who wrote about living in a gang-ridden area of Los Angeles. Their story was told in a book and movie starring Hilary Swank.
Students in Amy Hardgrove’s class at Academy with Community Partners will use Becerra’s inspiration as they keep their own journals about daily challenges and hopes for the future.
