A family trying to stay warm on a cold night fled their Mesa home after a fireplace filled the house with smoke.

Crews tells KSAZ-TV the family went to sleep and left their fireplace lit. They woke to find smoke throughout the home and called for help.

Mesa Fire Department Capt. Forrest Smith says it appears the family may have added one too many logs to the fireplace creating extra heat and smoke.

Everyone in the family, including their pets were able to get out of the home safely.
