Mesa has completed seven out of nine road improvement projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Over the last three months, about 18 miles of roadways were reconstructed or overlaid with new asphalt and enhanced with sidewalk ramps for the disabled as part of the federal government’s stimulus package. The work includes segments of Southern Avenue, Sossaman Road, Higley Road, Harris Street, Brown Road, University Drive and Alma School Drive.
Work areas remaining to be completed include Higley Road from Southern Avenue to University Drive and Power Road between Baseline and Broadway roads. All construction should be done by the end of October.
“Our goal is to have construction completed on both projects before November to avoid impacting the businesses in the area during the holidays,” said Rene Powell of the city’s engineering department.

Stimulus money is a joke. Most of the money has gone to big businesses and banks. What about small business? There is no stimulus for the small business person and those he employs. Talk about job loss, unemployment aid.

They did many of the side streets in my neighborhood, basically a thin black paint-over. Totally unnecessary! Why didn't they do main arteries where they have dribbled tar and it now looks like patchwork. The main arteries, riddled with cracks and potholes, needed the repairs more than the neighborhood's cosmetic surfacing. What a waste of money!
