A man died Monday in Mesa after a car driven by a suspected drunken driver struck him as he crossed the street.
The 38-year-old was running across Stapley Drive from east to west near Inverness Avenue about 11:30 p.m. when a northbound maroon 1997 Acura hit him and continued north, police said.
A Mesa police officer heard the crash, then saw the Acura drive off.
The officer caught up with the vehicle at the U.S. 60 overpass. The driver made a U-turn, then stopped in a parking lot.
Police said driver Ronnie Suazo, 33, failed sobriety tests and was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony hit-andrun and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
His name has not been released pending notification of family.
