Bruce Crandall, a 73-yearold former Mesa resident and city employee, received the Medal of Honor Monday at a ceremony held in the White House.

President George W. Bush awarded Crandall the nation’s highest military honor for his bravery in 1965 at the battle for the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam. Crandall repeatedly flew his helicopter into enemy-held territory during the heavy fighting. Crandall now lives in Manchester, Wash.
