Emphasizing a special need for “Type O-negative” donors, 24 Arizona hospitals — including five in the East Valley area — are urging potential blood donors to donate now in preparation for the Independence Day holiday rush next month.
According to United Blood Services, while donations decrease this time of year — presumably due to vacations by the number of people who regularly give blood — heavy highway traffic and the potential for accidents significantly increase the need for blood.
Leading up to and following the July 4 holiday, UBS has partnered with two dozen Arizona sites. East Valley locations include Arizona Orthopedic Surgical Hospital in Chandler, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, and Gilbert Hospital.
All donors will be entered into UBS’ summer raffle to win a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.
To make an appointment to donate, call (877) UBS-HERO (toll free) or visit www.bloodhero.com.

Yes, donate blood becuase thousands of illegals in our hospitals need it because they frequently get in a car accident, while drunk, and some stupid law makes it the taxpayers' responsibility to treat them.
