Not sure what to give your sweetheart for Valentine’s Day? Copperstar Repertory Co. has a unique gift of a singing telegram starting at $55, which also supports the Gilbert-based theater non-profit.
“We’re trying to do something that’s fun and that will help fund scholarships for camps,” said Mary-Jo Owaka, Copperstar president.
The Love Notes will help support spring and summer camp scholarships that the company puts on for children, Owaka said. It will also help transportation costs for student matinees of their shows.
All Love Notes include a written telegram and choice of the Turtles’ “Happy Together,” Nat King Cole’s “L-O-V-E,” “That’s How You Know” from Enchanted, Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take my Eyes Off of You.”
Love notes can be individualized to include a stuffed animal, rose, balloon, chocolates and more.
“Groups of four will sing for you, with harmony,” Owaka said.
The singers are principle characters from past and present Copperstar productions, she said.
And if you fall into the cliché category of people who forget Valentine’s Day, the company also has an “I’m Sorry” telegram option for Feb. 15.
The 5-year-old theater company lost its scene shop, office and costume shop when the Owaka’s house burned in September.
“We suffered a loss and we’re still trying to recover and find a new home,” Owaka said.
But that hasn’t kept the 501(3)c non-profit down, she said. They will be performing Les Miserables March 27 to 30 at the Mesa Arts Center.
