A Gilbert man faces charges of theft, forgery and false reporting to law enforcement after police say he misled an identity theft investigation.
Matthew Dilullo, 23, was arrested and booked into Maricopa County’s Fourth Avenue jail Thursday afternoon when Gilbert detectives investigating an ATM “card skimming” operation found he had provided false information to police and to a financial organization.
Gilbert police had sought the public’s assistance in identifying a woman photographed at an ATM who they believed had stolen $500 from someone else’s account 10 weeks ago. In card skimming, thieves target cash machines by using magnetic strips to retrieve data stored on computers inside the machine, with the intention of later using the data to make withdraws for themselves.
Sgt. Mark Marino, a Gilbert police spokesman, said the skimming in this case never occurred, the woman is not a suspect and Dilullo — who knew her — provided inaccurate information that misled the investigation and wasted police resources.
