A decision by the Gilbert Unified School District governing board April 9 means a junior high principal will remain in his job next school year.
On March 26, Greenfield Junior High School Principal Brian Yee was informed his contract would not be renewed for the 2013-14 school year. That decision was made by a 2-2 vote by the governing board, with governing board president Staci Burk abstaining from the vote.
District leadership had recommended Yee's rehiring.
Burk asked that the board reconsider the decision April 9. Following emotional statements from parents, students, teachers and community members, the board approved Yee's contract on a 3-2 vote. Burk, Jill Humpherys and Lily Tram voted in favor of giving him a new contract; Julie Smith and Daryl Colvin voted against it.
Yee was tranferred from Highland Junior High School to Greenfield Junior High School this school year. He had served at Highland for four years. Questions about his behavior were raised by some in the community and school, but last spring an independent attorney found that allegations of sexual misconduct to be “inconclusive.” A second report did identify management issues, Burk said. The report has not been made public, Burk said.
Yee is now working under a year-long performance improvement plan with a mentor, Burk said, explaining her vote.
