Residents who live in the area of Val Vista Drive from Riggs to Appleby Roads are invited to a neighborhood meeting to learn about and provide input about a project that will impact their neighborhoods. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at Perry Library, 1965 E. Queen Creek Road in Gilbert.

The Town of Gilbert is in the process of designing improvements to Val Vista Drive from Riggs Road to Appleby Road as a major arterial road. Improvements will include the widening of Val Vista Drive to three travel lanes and a bicycle lane in each direction, with a raised, landscaped median with turn lanes at appropriate locations.

Improvements also include storm drain facilities; median street lighting; conversion of the temporary span wire traffic signals at Ocotillo Road and at Chandler Heights Road to permanent, fully developed signals; waterline adjustments and stubs as necessary for the water distribution system; relocation of private irrigation facilities, RWCD lateral crossings and coordination of other utility facility relocations; and modification of signing and pavement marking beyond the project limits to accommodate the change in conditions. For information call (480) 898-4090.

Residents of the area take note, there are a few things you must know prior to voicing input on this project. 1. The AZ DOT always takes it's time "prepping" the site; 2.Once the site is prepped, and the lanes are as narrow as possible, we leave that for about a month, just to see who hits them. 3. After we take the "hit the vis-a-flash study we bring in equipment which we are finished using elsewhere (but have no place to put it), so it looks impressive. 4. When we finally start working, we like to drive our back-hoes in traffic to help slow it down, then we drive our dump trucks on the roadway, slam on the brakes, and pull to the side of the road, to make sure the cars that are following pay attention. 5. One of my personal favorites, we dig a trench to bury a pipe, cover it up, pack it down, then dig another trench to bury a second pipe (this is called putting the pipe to the taxpayer). 6. Not to be out done by this last one; called, oh, I forgot there's a bridge! This is when the job is complete, and the six lanes feed into a four lane bridge, so everything starts over again. If you want to experience 1-5 drive on Power Road (North of the tracks; Pecos to the 202), and for #6, you could marvel at the construction on Higley Rd (in the area of Lowe's). By the way, we like to have projects going on neighboring (and parallel) roads to alternates are cut down (helps in the frustration factor), so watch out for other coming attractions in the neighborhood!

You jack up Power Road, then Higgley, now you want to do Val Vista? Fix the other two before you jack up any more parallel paths.
