A 6-year-old boy drowned but his 5-year-old brother was saved after the two were pulled from an irrigation canal in Gilbert.

Gilbert police Sgt. Bill Balafas says an officer and a bystander did CPR on Brenan Thomson after he was pulled from the water. He was then taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead about two hours after he was pulled from the canal Saturday evening.

Police are investigating how the boys ended up in the canal. Their father called officers after they failed to return from a bicycle ride. Their bikes were found alongside the canal.
