Those looking for some holiday-themed exercise will have a great opportunity. Freestone District Park, 1045 E. Juniper Road, will be the site of the 12Ks of Christmas event on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a 12K race as well as a 1.2K Santa Sled Run, complete with prizes and awards.

Juniper Road, will be the site of the 12Ks of Christmas event on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a 12K race as well as a 1.2K Santa Sled Run, complete with prizes and awards. Check-in for the races is 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. with the races beginning at 10 a.m. Registration for the 12K is $30 through Thursday and $35 on the day of the event. Sign-up for the 1.2K is $30 for a team entry (four people) through Thursday and $35 on the day of the event.
If you’d rather shop than run, there will be a Christmas bazaar with food and drink vendors. Or visit the pet village and see some of the animals available through local adoption groups and shelters. Numerous singing groups will perform holiday music throughout the event.

Lakeside luminarias
Enjoy the beauty of the Riparian Preserve, 2757 E. Guadalupe Road, decorated by candles at the Luminaria at the Lake event, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Attendees will be entertained by storytellers, choirs, musicians and even an appearance by Santa Claus.
There is a $2 suggested donation for the event.

Christmas piano concert
Jon Schmidt will perform his original compositions as well as seasonal favorites 7 p.m. Friday at Gilbert High School, 1101 E. Elliot Road. Schmidt’s unconventional style includes playing the piano with his head, elbows and toes. The entertaining show is designed to appeal to the whole family.

Arts fair and farmers market
Val Vista Lakes, 1600 E. Lakeside Drive, will host the second Saturday Artisan Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local artists, vendors and farmers will have their wares on display.

'A Christmas Carol’
The Hale Centre Theatre will present the well-known tale by Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol,” Monday through Dec. 23.
This story of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey to discovering the true meaning of the holiday is a Christmas classic.
The theater is located at 50 W. Page Ave. Ticket prices $22 for matinees and $24 for evening shows.

Astronomy lecture and star viewing
Various astronomy concepts and new discoveries will be discussed during this monthly lecture series at 8 p.m. Friday in the library classroom at the Southeast Regional Library, 775 N. Greenfield Road.
A $3 donation is requested for the lecture. Afterward, the East Valley Astronomy Club will have telescopes set up outside for a free public star-viewing party.
