A teacher at Gilbert’s Classical Academy High School accused of having a sexual relationship with a student when she was underage, has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of a police investigation.

Levi Melton, who teaches English at the school, was suspended from his job last week, according to Dianne Bowers, spokeswoman for Gilbert Unified School District.

Per state law, the school district informed the investigative unit of the Arizona Board of Education of the allegations against Melton, which a state board official described as “unprofessional conduct.”

Melton has not been arrested or charged with any offenses, according to Sgt. Bill Balafas, Gilbert police spokesman.

The student now is 18 and a senior at the school, and investigators are working to determine whether any inappropriate conduct took place when the girl was a minor.

In an email sent to the Tribune, Bowers said, “We will work closely with the investigating law enforcement officials. In accordance with our policy, Mr. Melton has been placed on administrative leave and will remain out of the classroom until the investigation is complete.”
