The school community of Desert Ridge High School, a Gilbert Unified School District campus located in Mesa, is mourning the death of one of its students who died in a two-vehicle, wrong-way freeway crash late Monday.

Olivia Wilson, who recently turned 17 and played on the school’s varsity volleyball team, was killed shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday after the Toyota she was driving southbound on Interstate 17 in Phoenix was struck by a van going the wrong way near Van Buren Street, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Wilson had just completed her junior year, according to Gilbert Unified School District.

The driver of the van, whose name has not been released, also died. The driver is suspected to have been impaired by alcohol, according to DPS.

The driver of a Jeep, which collided with Wilson’s vehicle and the van, and a passenger in Wilson’s van were not injured, according to DPS.

The highway was closed for about six hours while crews were on the scene.
