The Gilbert Town Council voted Tuesday to fund police officers for the upcoming Sept. 22 Constitution Fair planned at Mesquite High School.

The council agreed on a 7-0 vote to allow at least four police officers, and more if deemed necessary by police Chief Tim Dorn, to work on overtime pay to ensure safety during the event and to alleviate traffic congestion. The town will also provide event signage to help the traffic flow.

The decision comes following a split among Town Council members as to whether to fund security for the fair, which cost the town about $33,800 in past years. This year, sponsors of the privately funded event have hired a security staff, and requested less support from the town.

The featured guest for this year’s event is Michael Israel, a nationally renowned artist who will paint on stage to patriotic music. For more information on the fair, which is free to the public, visit
