Chess education

Open chess instruction will be available for students in kindergarten through high school at all skill levels. Classes will meet 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Page Park Center, 132 W. Summer Kidz Kamp

The Kidz Kamp program teaches children, 5 to 12, communication skills, self-esteem and social interaction in a recreational environment. This two-week program runs Monday through Friday, beginning July 20. There are two time periods offered, a morning session that runs 9 a.m. to noon and an afternoon session that runs 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There is also a supervised lunch period that bridges the gap between the programs. Each session costs $43, and the lunch period is $20. All sessions are held at the Freestone Recreation Center, 1141 E. Guadalupe Road. For more information, call (480) 503-6202.

'Beauty and the Beast' stage show

The Hale Centre Theatre will present the award-winning stage show "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" through Aug. 29.

Roller-skating trip

The Teen Treks program for youths 11 to 15 continues with a trip to Skateland. The trip includes skate rental, three hours of skating and pizza. Registration is $15. Call (480) 503-6200 or visit www.GilbertRecreation.com to sign up. The trip will depart at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday from the Gilbert Community Services Department, 90 E. Civic Center Drive.

Community Emergency Response Team classes

The Community Emergency Response Team program helps train citizens to respond to emergency situations, such as natural disasters, in the community. The training instructs volunteers how to aid those in need, minimize casualties and assist first responders in a crisis situation.

CERT classes are scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 28 through Sept. 8. The classes will be at the Fire Administration Amphitheater, 85 E. Civic Center Drive. For more information or to register, call (480) 503-6325 or visit www.ci.gilbert.az.us.

Monday movie matinee

Watch a free animated movie on the large screen at the Gilbert Community Center, 130 N. Oak St., at 2 p.m. Monday. This week's feature is the Pixar hit "Ratatouille." Free popcorn will be available to enjoy during the film. For more information, call (480) 503-6290.

Basketball clinic

Youths ages 8 to 10 will learn the fundamentals of basketball through assorted drills and skill instruction. Topics that will be covered include dribbling, passing and shooting. The class will run 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Wednesday at the Freestone Recreation Center, 1141 E. Guadalupe Road. A $15 fee is required for the camp. Participants are required to wear tennis shoes and are encouraged to bring their own basketball.
