On April 3, the Gilbert Unified School District governing board approved the first reading of proposed math and English language arts textbook adoptions. With that, the community has through June 5 to review the selections at neighborhood elementary and junior high schools.
The governing board is expected to have the second reading and possible adoption of the textbooks at the June 5 regular board meeting. Textbooks also may be reviewed at Educational Services Department at the district offices, 140 S Gilbert Road, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Textbooks and the school system are only a starting point. Parental involvement is about 90% of a child's success in school, private or public. Too many parents are that in name only nowadays. They both work so they can have 2 Lexus', Rolex watches, a half-million dollar house, Gucci handbags, and other such nonsense. Children need a parent at home and both parents actively involved on a daily basis. Most of the kids who were my patients fell into one of these categories: ones who did well in school and stayed out of trouble, and the others who did poorly in school and were always in trouble. Same neighborhoods and same school system. Care to guess which kids had a parent at home (usually the mother) and had parental involvement daily?
