A man running from a grocery store parking lot carrying two bottles of vodka was hit by an SUV tonight while darting across Gilbert Road in Gilbert.

Gregory Wilhoit, 42, who is homeless, was flown to Scottsdale Osborn Healthcare hospital with serious injuries, said Gilbert Police Lt. Joe Ruet.

He was wearing dark clothing and running mid-block, not in a crosswalk, just south of Guadalupe Road when he was hit by the sport utility vehicle around 6:45 p.m., Ruet said.

The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer, Dustin Michael Pace, 39, of Mesa, did not appear to be speeding or drinking, Ruet said.
