The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Thursday that a 4-year-old Gilbert-area boy’s death a day after his mother found him tangled in a swing set was accidental and due to not getting enough oxygen to the brain.

K.C. Houston Smith was pronounced dead at Banner Cardon Children’s Medical Center on Tuesday, according to information from the Gilbert Fire Department, which responded Monday to the family’s residence near Recker and Brooks Farms roads on unincorporated county land in Gilbert moments after the boy’s mother discovered him entangled in part of the swing set in the family’s back yard.

Gilbert fire spokesman Mark Justus said the boy became tangled in some kind of rope as he was coming down the slide. The rope was not an original part of the swing set, and it was not known how long the boy had been outside.

The Smith family has set up a memorial account for the boy at Wells Fargo Bank. Donations can be accepted at any branch.
