The Gilbert Unified School District governing board agreed Tuesday with district leadership’s plans to keep recess for kindergarten through fifth grade as unstructured time.
The discussion took place as part of a state-mandated recess policy hearing in a regular board meeting. Schools districts across the state are required to hold a hearing by Dec. 31 to discuss recess policy, but do not have to adopt a formal, structured recess time.
Superintendent Dave Allison said he received 42 e-mails in favor of keeping unstructured recess and only two in favor of teacher-organized recess.
