A baseball rivalry between the Gilbert mayor and the town manager has resulted in a singing debut for Patrick Banger.

The town manager, a fervent St. Louis Cardinals supporter, will sing a song at the Gilbert Art Walk at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“I’m doing my best to be excited about it,” Banger said with little enthusiasm.

When the Cardinals lost to the San Francisco Giants Oct. 22 in the final game of the National League Championship Series, Mayor John Lewis won the bet that his team would progress to the World Series.

“I have zero singing experience,” Banger said laughing. “I have no recollection of anyone ever asking me to sing in public.”

That includes no singing in school choir or any musical experience to speak of at all, Banger said.

“If I ever sang, my mind is blocking it out,” he said.

And while Banger isn’t that excited, Lewis couldn’t be happier, especially after the World Series win, Banger said.

“I can’t tell you how excited the mayor is about it,” he said. “Have you seen the video?”

The video, released by the town, can be viewed on the town’s YouTube channel.

In it, the mayor asks for suggestions from town residents.

Banger said that Lewis suggested he sing either “I Lost My Heart in San Francisco” or the Rolling Stone’s “Satisfaction.”

However, Banger has an alternative idea — having his wife sing with him. His wife, he said, is a fantastic singer.

“She’s somewhere between me dragging her in and a willing participant,” he said. “She’s a great wife, a good sport.”

If Banger convinces his wife (and presumably the mayor), he hopes to sing Sonny and Cher’s “I’ve Got You Babe.”

Either way, Banger is following through on his gentleman’s bet.

The Art Walk is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Water Tower Plaza in downtown Gilbert. For more information, visit http://www.gilbertartwalk.com.
