Seven Scottsdale students won awards in Arizona State University’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. poster-essay contest.

In all, 24 students statewide were honored.

Scottsdale students swept two essay categories:

• Middle school: Philip Janasz, Mountainside Middle School eighth-grader, first place; Annie McGeorge, Ingleside Middle School seventhgrader, second place; Hannah McDonald, Mountainside Middle School eighth-grader, third place.

• Secondary school: Kate Naranjo, Chaparral High School sophomore, first place; Carly Fusco, Chaparral sophomore, second place; Pam Weir, Chaparral sophomore, third place.

Samantha McMahon, a senior at Desert Mountain High School, won second place for her poster in the secondary category.

The winners will be honored at a celebration breakfast Jan. 27 at the main ASU campus in Tempe.

More than 1,500 children entered the contest, each describing someone they know who leads through service to others. Winning entries are online at

Categories in the contest are primary, grades K-2; intermediate, grades 3-5; middle, grades 6-8; and secondary, grades 9-12.
