There is a new choice in public charter schools that will be debuting two brand new campuses late summer 2014, just in time for the next school year. EAGLE (Expecting Academic Greatness with a Loving Emphasis) College Prep will debut their Maryvale and Mesa campuses and initially offer kindergarten through third grade and build out a new grade each consecutive school year until they reach 8th grade. The new campuses will join the two existing EAGLE College Prep schools in South Phoenix.
Tracy Allen is the principal of the EAGLE: Mesa campus and Yesenia Fitzhugh is the principal of the EAGLE: Maryvale campus. “It’s important for me to return and serve the community I grew up in,” Fitzhugh explained. “I’m devoted to our students’ success, both here at school and as members of our vibrant community.” Allen added, “We believe that college starts in kindergarten. We promote that every child is going to college. We talk about colleges and research them… They feel like part of something greater and have some direction. These scholars are reminded that their decisions now lay the foundation for their future.”
The educational program is a blended learning model and students receive three different types of instruction during the day including computer time. “During the day students participate in a customized learning experience including whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction,” Fitzhugh said. Students can progress further at an accelerated pace once they’ve demonstrated the mastery of previously presented materials.
“We also have special areas of focus,” stated Allen. “We have a writing class in which all scholars receive writing instruction with a specialized writing teacher on top of their Language Arts instruction each day.”
Another special area within EAGLE is the SEA class which scholars participate in each day. This stands for Science, Engineering and Art. Students participate in hands-on science and engineering projects using Engineering is Elementary and Lego Engineering with a focus on art integration.
Building character is also an important part of the “loving emphasis” of their students’ growth. Allen emphasizes that each child’s character is unique and must be developed. “We believe that you can’t just have high academics to be successful in your life. You also need good character-building skills,” Allen said. “Good character skills are useful now and throughout life.”
“I see first-hand how having a strong character program can a positive impact on the whole child,” Fitzhugh noted. “Our school utilizes a program called The Character Project that gives our students an understanding of their identity, purpose and performance through weekly virtue studies.”
Fitzhugh loves that she has a strong sense of community with her new school, something she hopes to pass along to her students. “I am able to go back to work in the community where I grew up and give our students a high quality education,” noted Fitzhugh. “Having them prepared for and in the mind-set for college is important.”
