Talent show set for arts center

Queen Creek Elementary School is hosting a talent show 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center, 22149 E. Ocotillo Road. The cost is $3 and proceeds will benefit the school.

GILBERT

Registration begins for kindergarten

Kindergarten registration will begin at all Gilbert Unified School District schools starting Monday . Parents may contact their home school for specific times and half-day/full-day kindergarten information.

To register for the 2009–2010 school year, children must turn 5 prior to Sept. 1, 2009.

Children who turn 5 between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31 will need to pass a district screening before being admitted to kindergarten. Early entrance screening will be June 2–4. Parents may contact their neighborhood school for further information and an early entrance screening application.

Choral Festival planned for Mesquite

The Gilbert Unified School District’s Sixth-Grade Choral Festival will be 7 p.m. Monday at Mesquite High School, 500 S. McQueen Road.

Higley offers training for families

Higley Unified School District’s Department of Special Education and the Parent Information Network are offering trainings for parents, families, and staff. A workshop discussing parents as advocates will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.

Boulder Creek hosts Oratorical Contest

Boulder Creek Elementary School in the Gilbert Unified School District is hosting a district Oratorical Contest 6:30 p.m. Monday in the school’s multipurpose room, 8045 E. Portobello Ave., Mesa.

Board will vote on graduation requirements

The Gilbert Unified School District governing board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 140 S. Gilbert Road. The board is expected to vote on whether to rescind the district’s 23-credit graduation requirement policy.

Mesquite takes on Peoria on show

The Mesquite High School Brainstorm Student Team of Kevin Yang, Tandace Nassiri and Ajijya Acharya will be on the Brainstorm! game show 6 p.m. Wednesday on Cox Cable Channel 7. The Gilbert team will be competing against Peoria Accelerated High School and Estrella Foothills High School.

School boundaries under discussion

The Higley Unified School District governing board will discuss boundaries for Centennial Elementary School in a study session at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert. The board has held several parent forums and discussed the issue at several school board meetings, but has delayed approving any boundaries.

The board plans to review all the proposals at this study session, and is expected to make a decision at the next board meeting on Feb. 12.

Centennial will open in August in Power Ranch at 3507 S. Ranch House Parkway, Gilbert.

Highland is site of dance concert

Highland High School is hosting a beginning and intermediate dance concert called “Turn it Up” at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the school’s auditorium, 4301 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert. The community is invited to come out to see some hip hop, jazz, lyrical, and contemporary dance performances. Tickets are $4 and can be purchased at the door.

College Night Coming Thursday: Mesquite High School is hosting a College Night 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday in the school’s auditorium at 500 S. McQueen Road, Gilbert. Students and parents can learn about college admissions, scholarships, financial aid and ACT/SAT testing.

EAST VALLEY

Transition fair for disabled students

The transition from high school to the real world can be a difficult and stressful time for many students, especially for those with disabilities.

East Valley school districts are joining forces to host the 5th annual East Valley Transition Fair from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mesquite High School, 500 S. McQueen Road, Gilbert.

More than 400 students and families from around the East Valley will attend the transition fair to learn about services that are available once disabled students leave high school. Representatives from more than 50 organizations will offer information and support to students with a range of disabilities. Vendors include local colleges and universities, government agencies, and local non-profit and for-profit organizations.

The fair is planned by special education staff from the Gilbert, Chandler, Higley, Mesa, Queen Creek, Tempe, and Apache Junction districts.
