An initiative for a sales tax increase has enough valid voter signatures to appear on Arizona’s November ballot, but it also must survive a court fight.
Some counties have yet to finish checking a random sample of petition signatures, but the Secretary of State’s Office says other counties have already verified more than 10,200 signatures. That’s well over the 8,640 required.
An official certification won’t be made until after all the counties report.
Meanwhile, the state Supreme Court is considering Secretary of State Ken Bennett’s appeal of a judge’s ruling that the initiative can go on the ballot despite an incomplete filing with Bennett’s office.
The initiative would raise the sales tax by one cent on the dollar, taking effect in 2013 when a voter-approved temporary sales tax increase expires.
